Default Radio volume problem

Another forum member suggests I post here for this problem. 2002 T/A with Monsoon CD head unit. The volume fluctuates constantly and the volume **** works doesn't work properly. Another member suggested spraying MAF sensor cleaner on the shaft but that did not solve any problems. Almost certain it is not a BCM problem as the other problems I had have been resolved. Thanks, Tom

I think the little "encoder" that interprets the volume **** rotation gets dirty over time and begins to malfunction. Mine does the same thing, in fact the **** only turns UP the volume on mine, fortunately the steering wheel buttons still work and I can use that to turn down the volume. I've not dug into this to try to fix it, but I'm sure the HU chassis needs to be removed, disassembled and either clean the volume encoder or replace it. Spraying cleaner on the shaft used to work way back when TVs had a separate 13-channel VHF tuner **** because those tuners had the guts (and the numerous electrical contacts associated with each channel position) exposed behind the control panel. Not so with modern electronics. Thus far, I've just been living with it.
