you will not hurt anything by using an amp that pushes less power than what the speaker can handle, as long as you have the gain set correctly.

Also, if we're not fortunate enough to own a JL amp, how do we know where we want the voltage set to? For example, the manual for my Kicker ZX460 says the following:
Max distortion at rated power, 4 ohm 12.5 - 16 VDC:0.02%

i haven't used that personally, just found it with a quick google search for "test tone cd"
as far as what voltage your amp needs to be set at, you'd have to contact your amp's manufacturer, or maybe a local stereo shop has the specs
