Switches keep burning out- any recommendations?
Switches keep burning out- any recommendations? I have the Thunder Racing line lock kit and have had it for years. I've intermitently had problems with the switches. My understanding is that the relay reduces the voltage sent to the switch. Upon checking things out with my voltmeter, I confirmed that. 12 volts to relay, 8 volts to the switch.
I purchased an automotive 12 volt, 30 Amp illuminated switch at Radio Shack. It's pretty common and looks nice. I hooked it up and it all worked nice, so then I soldered everything and put it back in and now nothing works. This is the 3rd time this has happened. Either the illumination function gives up and stops working or the switch does. I hate the cheesey button that they now use and I need to get this thing working for the last track event this weekend. Any suggestions are welcome because Radio Shack has no clue when I talk to them...

relays don't reduce voltage, they reduce the current that that is required.
How do you have it wired, you need it like this.
Power-------switch------(85)--relay--86------ground.
Pin 30 of the relay, to +12 volts battery
Pin 87 to the linelock.
