with xm radio, sirius and all the others, do they all source the same satellites?

i'd hate to get all setup with one and find that a different brand has better stuff.

well they offer comperable stuff but sirius has the Howard Stern show and nfl nba those are things I like. I travel up to Wisconsin alot from chicago and we always lose radio stations; it would be nice if that did not happen and with sirius it will not. so after Christmas Im treating my self.

did you guys check out the free player

Sirius is much better. Also, XM is regulated by the FCC. Sirius is not.

As an installer, the one thing i like about XM is It has a repeater so you can listen to it in garages etc. But sirius is a better system. Get what you pay for.

Sirius is like $12.95 or $499 for lifetime usage. XM is like $3 cheaper. Like was said, you get what you pay for.

A couple of clarifications:

First, neither XM nor Sirius is "regulated by the FCC" (at least not for program content - just for the allocations of frequencies for both services). I can't imagine what would give you an idea like that.

Second, the two services broadcast on slightly different frequencies, and equipment designed for one will not work with the other (so choose carefully BEFORE buying the equipment). It is possible to use some of the new micro antennas with either service but it is not recommended.

Third, be cautious about the Sirius lifetime offer. It is for the lifetime of the receiver, not your lifetime. If the receiver breaks down or you decide to upgrade next year to a newer one then you will have spent $500 for one year of service. However, Sirius often offers a "15 months for the price of 12" special that brings their price close to the same $10 per month as XM.

I have both services in different vehicles and, although I prefer Sirius, they really aren't that different. Sirius has more mainstream programming while XM is a little more "edgy". Reception is generally better with Sirius and their tuners seem to have several seconds of memory built-in (I can go halfway through a tunnel before losing Sirius signal whereas I lose the XM signal almost as soon as I enter the tunnel). That means that overpasses and heavily treed streets have less effect on Sirius than on XM.

i'm confused with all this, i have an apline 7998 which is xm ready, so if i get the terk xm unit, am i locked down to using xm radio only? can i only get the sirius service with that sirius reciever deal or can i use the terk satellite reciever with the sirius subscription?

If you want XM have to get the Terk XM Direct.. If you want Sirius have to get the DEI Sirius Unit.. I have an idea but dont know if it would work.. but the DEI Tuner has a Ainet passthrough.. i wonder if you could hook the XM unit up through the passthrough.. and then the SAT Source would be sirius but when you switched to CD changer it would pick up the XM tuner.... the only other thing would be running two antenna's..

Satellite radio is really great for people who travel a lot. You can leave New York city and go to Los Angeles without ever changing the station. You also get dedicated, genre -specific stations(i.e. Classical only, hip-hop only, Country only , Metal only, etc.) stations. XM and Sirius both have unique stations that the other doesn't . One has Nascar, one has NFL "official" stations. The best advice so far is to choose carefully which has the stations that appeal to most. As for the antennas, they perform best mounted on the exterior of the car on metal (trunk lid, roof) . The most common are tape mounts or magnet mounts.

would mounting the antenna underneath or trimmed out in the plastic cowl/wiper area be a decent spot?

The Sirius antennas don't seem to like that much. They work much better if they done the way described above. I've put on a few hundred of these things and the ones not done that way always came back with reception problems. The XMs are a little more forgiving.

is it something to do with the metal panels improving reception or just being on the exterior of the car with a decent line of sight towards the sky? it would just be alot cleaner to me if the antenna could mount in/on the cowl area. its a big hunk of ugly plastic to begin with.

I put one of those "micro" antennas on the plastic trim between the t-tops. You have to drill a hole through the roof under the trim panel and run the wire under the back lip to the hole but it is so small that it's not very noticeable and it gives great reception mounted high like that.

There seems to be a mistaken impression that these antennas need to be mounted on a metal surface for good reception. The metal surface is only necessary for the magnetic mount to work - use two-sided tape instead. A metal "ground plane" is only necessary for transmitting antennas (CB, short wave, etc.) and has no effect on reception.

Ive listened to both for extended periods of time and XM not only offers better programming but also at better sound quality rates.

Programming preference is a subjective thing - I prefer the programming on Sirius, many prefer the XM programming. However, there is no difference in sound quality between the two services. The only differences might come from the receiver being used. For example, my new Clarion PnP Sirius receiver has better sound quality (as long as I don't use the built-in FM modulator) than either my Roady XM receiver or my older Jensen Sirius receiver.

I beg to differ I have done tests side by side at my previous job at a high end stereo store and you could easily tell that XM had a cleaner sound. Plus they are not both broadcast at the same bit rates im not sure of the specifics as it has been awhile since I sold car stereo equipment.
