Default Headlights work then turn off

Ok, my headlights will come on when I start my car but will then just turn off and not turn back on. One thing I noticed is that the radio has static until the headlights stop then it plays normal. Also, i'm having spikes when the lights are off such as my tach jumping a little and my speedo. If the car is allowed to sit for at least a couple hours the lights will work for a short period before going off again.

The taillights still work and the foglights will still work as well. It just boggles my mind that they will work and then just stop. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Sounds like it could possibly be your headlight switch going bad. I had a similar problem in my 93 Z71 truck. The headlights would work for a while at first, then go out. I noticed that the switch was getting really hot as well.

I would have never guessed the headlight switch, but that certainly seems viable. My first thought would be a bad ground somewhere under the hood - possibly even at the battery. I'd make sure those are good first only because it doesn't cost anything to do that. Then probably the headlight switch.

Are you using the switch to turn the lights on?
My camaro had automatic head lights.
Does it make a difference when you use the switch?

2muchrice made a valid point that I overlooked. If you have auto headlights then it may not be the switch it`s self. My 93 truck didn`t have the auto lights, so it was wired straight through the switch via a relay or fusable link. If you do have auto lights, then try looking at the relays. That could be a possible source. I`m sure, though, it`s somewhere in the wiring of the headlights. Hope that helps

Thanks guys, I'll have to try some of these suggestions tomorrow. To answer a couple questions, they are the lights that are always on, no need to use the switch at all. If the cars off, the switch still won't turn them on. I've thought about the ground, but why would the headlights start working after the car had a couple hours to sit? I'm thinking that the idea of the relays could be the culprit, do I just buy new ones and hope that's the problem? I appreciate the help guys.

Same problem here...just changed the switch, it cured the problem.....for a week.
I'll keep you updated if I finally figure out what's going on.
