you can have the best of both worlds. a properly designed and tuned ported box, good subs, lots of power, and you'll have your thump. the proper design and tuning will also give you good sq. so when you're in that mood, drop the xover to the subs down to 50hz or so and fade the subs down and you're back enjoying your mids and highs. another problem i see with most set ups,....they have 1000 watts to their subs, and one set of highs with about 50 watts to them. of course they're lacking, look how bad the highs are overpowered. for systems i do, 2 12's ported with 1kw, i also put in 2 sets of components with about 100 watts a set. these are loud daily pounders that outpound most everyone else, but yet are clean with the highs keeping up no matter what music thrown at it. vocals, insturments, etc,... not just a crappy all bass and tweeter set up.
not to be long winded, just some ideas of things for you to evaluate.

1ohm stable w/1500+ watts.........smells like u need (want) a 12 or 15" Memphis MOJO, but be prepared to pay $500.00 w/o enclosure and you'll need a reinforced sub enclosure, b/c these things THUMP HARD.
I run a pair of Memphis M3 10's (formerly HPO), but replaceable w/cones (new design 2 yrs ago). I have a set of both dual 4ohm cones and 4ohm cones just for S&G's. Stick w/4ohm if you go w/Memphis A/B amps, as they are more efficient believe or not. These subs will/can perform in both SP and SQ capacity if tuned/ported properly.
Not advertising, but go to the Memphiscaraudio webpage and review the specs for yourself. AGAIN, NOT CHEAP, But then what is these days (lol)
and beware, they are HEAVY (look at the magnet)
