Default Hands Free Cell Kit

Hi all... Im going to put a hands free kit in my car.... Looking at the install book (for the hands free kit) it has a wire to mute the stero for an incoming call. Is there a wire on the monsoon that this goes to?

The factory radio has no mute wire, but you could use a relay and have it interupt ignition to the radio when the hands free was active.

Actually, there is a mute function for the factory radio but there's no separate wire that triggers it. The steering wheel controls all run through a single wire (dark blue) to the head unit and each switch adds a set amount of resistance to the circuit which the head unit reads to determine which switch was pressed.

If you connect your hands free kit mute wire through 2387 ohms to the dark blue wire then the radio will interpret a signal on that wire as the mute button being pressed. I know, where do you get a 2387 ohm resistor? I don't know what the tolerance is but I expect that 2400 ohms would work (that's less than one percent). You can combine resistors inline to total the correct amount or you could get a variable pot and set it using a multimeter.

how did you find the resistance for the mute wire? also do you know the resistance for the other buttons on the steering wheel, cause if i can figure them out i'm going to use the volume button on my steering wheel to open and clost my exhaust cutout

The resistance I listed is taken directly from the service manual. The other values are:
Right side
Volume up: 1270 ohms
Volume down: 1564 ohms
Play: 1912 ohms
Mute: 2387 ohms
Left side
Seek up: 3102 ohms
Seek down: 4282 ohms
AM/FM: 6652 ohms
Preset: 13612 ohms

Now all you have to do is build a logic circuit that can recognize the different resistances and use this information to pass a 12 volt current to either the open or close wire of your cutout.

Radio shack has some 2.2K's.. You can get that and perhaps a 220. Both in series should yield close to 2.4K ohms..
