whats the difference?

The iPOD plays MP3s plus its own propietary fike type.
Most people that aren't computer literate prefer iPODs, as you use programs like iTunes to tranfer files to and from the iPOD. Most other (not all) MP3 players allow dragging and dropping of files through windows explorer as well as through software like music match.
I like to think of most players like a thumbdrive. Copy them on and they can play. copy them back off at work to keep them on your computer there. THe ipod, requires iTunes (or Sharepod to transfer songs back off) to transfer songs back on. It renames the files and puts them in its own folder structure. This is invisible if you are simply using it as a player and connect to only one computer, but if you bounce between home and work/school, then it sucks.
THe iPOD does allow you to drag files in/out via explorer but if you do it that way, they are treated as files, and not playable as music on the iPOD.
Now as for the cool thing about the iPOD: They are the most popular player out there, as such they have tons of compatibility. You can get an Alpine KCA-420 to interface your Alpine head unit to the ipod. Lock the ipod out of site in the glove box and control it through your head unit (or sterring wheel controls if you have additional options.). The Dension interface allows you to hook up factory head units to the iPOD. THere are many more options out there.
Unfortunately the accessory market for iPod's pwns all others, which is something to consider for such a device. You will pay more for all of it though, as it is a status/marketing hit... but at least the items are there and available.
Just be a man and get a MP3 capable deck. JVC at least, even makes one that plays MP3's off a DVD, if you REALLY hate changing out discs.

both work in similar ways, one is just made by apple & used primarily as a status symbol, or a monopolizing device... but im just sayin....
