Default Do I have to support the back of the head unit?

I have a Alpine 9847 and have yet to install it. My dad told me that I will have to rig up a way to support the head unit from the back, is that true?

yeah, you're gonna have to find some way to support it in the back. If you don't any big bump and the back of the head unit will fall down. I have an alpine 9853, i took a piece of pvc and some double stick tape and made a support for the back of it.

i have had about 5 different radios in my camaro since i bought it, i have never once used back strapping. I have always just made sure that the cage was around the mounting kit tightly.

you wont need one

btw, my current deck is an alpine 9855

I have plenty of installs where I've just rigged up some sort of support on the bottom of the radio.

Lacking the proper rear/pin support... just something shimmed to hold the bottom of the radio will do the job. Could be as simple as cardboard layered thick enough to support it.

I'd do something though, a little is better than nothing.

I installed my radio without the back strap and so far the radio seems fine and has stayed in place through bumps.

On the back of the radio (most aftermarket radios as a matter of fact), is a threaded hole.. m4 I think. Maybe m5.

here's a zoom of the install kit for our cars.

Towards the left lower half of that pic, you see those things with the nipples on 'em. You bolt it on to the back of the radio. That provides your rear support (assuming you didn't knock out the back plastic of the dash hole).

Sorry if this reply is written half assed.. I'm mostly drunk and partially asleep.

I agree. I have many HU installs under my belt, and the cage has always been enough to keep it snug, even through track runs, etc.

The possibility of making the cage work alone also depends on the quality of the dash kit.

I did have one dash kit for the camaro, the metra, which after trying over and over I couldn't get to hold the radio properly, so I refered to the sticky and got that kit and it was solid.

Ive found that the back strap does nothing but cause it to skip more.
Use the metra kit in the FAQ and bend all the tabs and youll be fine.
