Default Question about Monsoon system

I just blew two speakers in my 99 Z. When I went searching for replacement speakers, I was told I would have to replace the head unit and speakers. If I would just replace the speakers, they would just produce bass. Did anyone else come across this? Know where I can get replacement (OEM or Aftermarket) for a good price?

It is true to an extent, I had the same problem I blew the front two speakers.. I put after market speakers in it but it did not sound very good, and I eneded up getting stock replacements. Some good info here

Factory sound systems can get complicated when you want to go with aftermarket stuff. There is an amp in each speaker which is why everything would need to be re-wired. It can get kinda pricey, but so can going through the dealer or OEM. Might as well get a new (and better) head unit and re-wire with new (and better) speakers all the way around. Just my 2 cents.

Huh?
Not in the f-body's Monsoon system.
The Monsoon has a central amp located next to the spare tire which is fed by the speaker-level outputs of the headunit.

Here is the speaker replacement guides from the FAQ:

Ahh I see. I stand corrected, thanks. Usually with factory sound systems like bose or whatever, there's an amp for each speaker. Even with the central amp, it's more of a hassel than just replacing the speakers with aftermarket ones.

What? I have the bose in my car. There is only one amp.

I think you're talking about the older Bose Premium sound system that predates the Monsoon.

There is no reason you would HAVE to replace the entire system because you blew a speaker. I've replaced my door speakers with Alpines with no trouble. I have better sound quality without spending a fortune and no rewiring of the rest of the stock system.
