Do the turn signals work? That would indicate if there is a break in the wire someplace since the brake lights and rear signals use the same feed wire (on a Firebird).

I had the same problem, no brake lights at all, turn signals and third brake light would work fine. Turns out I had a bad turn signal switch. It's inside the steering column so you will need to remove the airbag and pull the steering wheel to get to it. The way I checked before I replaced the switch was to tilt the steering wheel all the way up and step on the brakes, if they work then you know there is a short in the turn signal switch somewhere. I chased this problem for about 6 weeks until I found it, I thought I was never gonna be able to drive my car again...lol
