Stupid Question:
I just want to know one thing.
Is it possible to just up and toss the stock head unit in our 99-02 Camaros and simply install a new head unit and speakers? I'm also assuming I'll need to run new wiring?
Every Chevy dealer I've called has told me that this is not possible because the keyless entry and alarm system are somehow a part of the head-unit. That if I replace the head-unit, I'll have to leave the stock unit wired, and relocated to the trunk or whatever.
Is that true or not true? I'd love to junk the entire system and put one in that actually sounds good.
I appreciate any advice, and any flames too. I'm pretty knowledgeable about most subjects pertaining to the F-body, but this isn't one of them.
Thanks, folks.
The system uses a seperate amplifier in the spare tire area that is much stronger than any (even high end) deck amps. The only exception I can think of would be the new panasonics with the digital amps.
Otherwise you are better off replacing the head unit and speakers, keeping the amp, and wiring the speakers up correctly (bi-wiring as appropriate).
If you insist on running new wires, then of course you could run wires straight from the new deck to your new speakers. But this is not necessary and the monsoon amp IS stronger than head unit amps. I'd only bother with wiring if you are also talking about adding a seperate amplifier.
No matter what you do this will have no impact on your cars electronics outside of the radio. Dealers are quoting blindly off of newer systems that had some features (mostly just door chimes) integrated into the radio system. It is a problem mostly on GM cars around 02 or later when onstar came into the picture. Our cars do not have this problem.
