If you have a car with the base 4 speaker stereo then doing a standard deck/4 speaker upgrade will get you above monsoon quality levels easily. The best bang for the buck would be to upgrade door speakers (treble and midrange) and add a small subwoofer (maybe a tube).

If you have an existing system in your old car then the transistion is not as painful as you might think.
- The head unit drops right in, old fashioned GM harness install, no trickery.
- PAX makes a steering wheel control unit, about $40, that turns the steering wheel inputs into a remote signal. So long as your head unit has a wireless remote, for $40 you can keep the wheel controls functional, and actually program any button function you want.
- 6.5" door speakers drop right in, and if you mod them to be bi-wired, you retain the factory amp power, which is actually fairly decent (about 20-30 rms per channel).
Transferring the head unit and front door speakers will be a major upgrade, if they are decent equipment.
If you want bass then a sub is the only way to go. Trying to add bass to a monsoon system via driver replacement just doesn't work very well.
