Default enough power for a 4channel

i got 2 sets of alpine SPS171A component speakers 50 watts RMS is the alpine MRPF250 4 channel amp 40watts rms per channel gonna be enough power to feed these speakers or should i upgrade to the MRPF450 amplifier for $100 more. I'm sticking with all alpine equipement.

if you havent already bought the 250 amp, then yes upgrade for 100$ more. even though the amp will put out more power than the speakers can "handle," it is always better to overpower speakers a little bit than underpower them. just be careful on your amp's gain settings and those speakers should sound good off of that amp.

If you take a look at the details of both amps the 450 has better power, but it's most noticeable for 2 ohm loading.

If you are stuck on using 171A's then those are 4 ohm drivers - and the difference between the 250 and 450 will be 30 watts rms. This is a small enough difference that it will not be worth spending 50% more on the amp - unless you are not running a sub and need those drivers for bass. However if you have no sub it might make sense.

If you could get 2 ohm speakers (like the popular infinities or whatever) then the 450 has the capability to deliver 100 watts rms into 2 ohm loading. In this case - the 450 would offer a very significant advantage, and begins to make sense.

If you have a sub - stick with the smaller amp and put extra money in your pocket. I also don't think you need components in the back - but that is up to you. I think you could use 171 coaxials and still be voice matched, while saving $100.

If you don't have a sub - then upping the power. Again you could get coaxials for the back and end up at the same total.

The 171's can sound good, but need a sub. Apline components are tailored more towards mid-bass and probably isn't the best choice in a 6.5" system with no sub.

ahhh wise grasshopper, I did not know the specs on that amp, now knowing that, i totally agree on the 2ohm vs. 4ohm reasoning. This is all of course dependant on what equipment you have already bought and what you havent. Its good that you are researching though before you buy instead of buying and saying, "did i F up? haha but ya, 2 ohm capability will be great especially in the future as i feel more companies will move towards varying their impedances on their speakers (my Boston pros are 3ohm and they are a 2004 model) I also second the idea of not needing extra components in the rear, simply use that money on better front components (maybe they alpine type X if you are hell bent on staying alpine) let us know what you already have and we can work from there

I think ill got with the MRP250 so ill have that $100 for something more important.
I got one alpine 10in sub in the back in a mtx thunderform box so thats plenty of bass for me. I'm not looking to make the nieghbors up with music the exhaust will do that job just fine I just want it to sound good to my passengers and me.
THX for all the input guys.
