Default Head unit for Ipod?

I am looking at getting a new head unit since I spent 300 on an Ipod. Are there any advantages to one that hooks up in the rear? I like the idea of the ones with the usb port in the front. Also does that usb charge the Ipod? What about track selection? Can you seek through the reciever or do you have to navigate with the Ipod wheel?

you can use the ipod with stock head unit.. Thats how I have it I can use the steering wheel controls and it charges the Ipod. It converts your ipod so your stereo thinks it is a cd changer.

post 6 has the link to the hook up cables.

If you get a h/u that is ipod capable, then you navigate the ipod through the actual head unit. And yes, it does charge the ipod. I have the Alpine 9856 H/U, and I LOVE that thing. Its badass looking and it has the cable coming off the back of the radio to connect to your ipod. The cable to connect the ipod to the stereo is $30. What I did was put a small hole in my glove box and ran the cabe behind the dash, to the back of my radio. Its very concealed- with the ipod in the glove box, nobody knows unless you tell them. I think its badass!!

As said before, the h/u's that are ipod ready/compatable can be hooked up through the back and controlled from the headunit. You can also charge them this way. The new alpine headunits are my favorite, mostly because now they have most of the ipod controlls built into them, so all you have to get is a 30$ cable (422i), instead of a 80$ box. Also, these pull information (song names, ect) alot faster than previous ones, so you can scroll through songs and artists 2 or 3x faster.

I have the clarion flip out screen/dvd player. It comes ready for ipod hookup from the factory. It even shows the ipod interface on its screen. I keep my ipod in my glove box and forget about it. The head unit charges it and totally controls it. I believe the model number is something like vrx755 or something like that. Oh yeah and its touch screen so its very simple to control. I even have my steering wheel controls hooked up to it.
