good place to ground the headunit?

good place to ground the headunit? i've installed an alpine headunit and in trying to track down a slight hiss i decided to make my own ground rather than use the stock wire harness, so i grounded it to the chassis over by the drivers left foot behind that kick panel, it was the only clear ground i knew of.
well i put it all back together and now not only is there a slight hiss but there are slight popping noises every once and awhile.
so i guess i get to do the whole grounding thing again ... i assume i should ground it to the chassis closer to the headunit using a shorter and maybe a thicker wire, right?
where should i ground it to closer to the headunit? are there any good spots right there?

You could run a wire down towards the transmission tunnel and theres a few spots on there in the center to ground it. Just get a 3/4" self tapping and make sure you get good connections. This way, it's out of the way, easy to access and works!
