Default need help with speaker replacement

My ss came withe the monsoon system, but atleast 2 of my speakers are blown. I want to replace and upgrade all my speakers with aftermarket, but i need help. I really dont know much about sound systems as you will be able to tell. I'm more into the cars looks and peformance. I dont want to get a box and amp just yet, i just want to upgrade my stockers. I think the doors are 4'' , and the rear seats are 6 1/2. I guess that these speakers must be replaced with the same size speakers correct? If so any suggestions? Price is not an issue , but i dont want more than i need. As for the 2 trunk speakers, they appear to be 4''. Can i upgrade these 2 in size? There seem to be alot of extra room, and i was thinking a 6 by 9 would fit. Would this work or should it stay stock size? Also , i no longer have the stock head unit, it was replaced with a kenwood dvd player. If this helps as far as the sound i am looking for, I want a little more base than stock, but still be able to hear the words. Sorry that i know so little about this, but that just makes me appreciate your help a lot more. Thanks in advance.

You have a 6.5 front, 6.5 mid, 4" rear

In order to replace these speakers with aftermarket 4ohm speakers, you need to rewire the system. This is easier than it sounds. You are basicaly taking the monsoon amp out, and running new wire from the 2 fronts, and 2 mids, to the deck. You will need a new deck, and ONLY replace the 2 fronts and 2 mid speakers. IMO i wouldnt even replace the mid speakers, i would just replace the fronts with a nice coaxal or component set if you plan to amplifly later on.

I would just do a simple basic system all at once..and never deal with it again

deck
front speakers
4ch amp
10" sub.

If thats asking too much, you still need to do the deck and 4 speakers. And rewire reguardless.

Thanks for the help. I am going to rewire the system, But i thought that the stock amp might be able to handle it, i guess i was wrong. Any suguestions on a good , but not too expensive amp?

Contrary to what some people will tell you (especially some shops that want to sell a lot of work) there is no reason to rewire the system. You can use aftermarket 4-ohm speakers and they will work well as long as you get efficient ones to compensate for the power reduction caused by increasing the impedance.

There are other considerations. For example, the door speakers are actually separate components even though they are mounted coaxially. That means either using just one pair of wires from the original harness for the replacement speakers or modifying coaxial speakers to work like components by separating the driver leads on the speakers. Another consideration is that the Monsoon amp provides only low frequency signal to the sail panel locations so coax speakers there won't produce any highs.

There have been several threads about replacing speakers recently. Check out the Monsoon Frequently Asked Questions thread at the top of the forum for more information.
