If I remember correctly, its integrated into the door latch.

Yes, the door switches are integrated in the door latches. But the switches themselves don't control the courtesy lights like on older cars. The BCM uses the signal from the switches to control the lights. This allows it to provide retained accessory power (windows and radio still work until a door is opened) and the theater dimming effect of the lights.

If you want to control the lights independent of the BCM you need to use the dark blue with white wire in the black 6-pin connector at the BCM for power feed and the white wire in the blue 32-pin connector at the BCM for ground.

The gray with black (driver's) and black with white (passenger's) wires in the blue 32-pin connector at the BCM are the signal wires from the door switches. They go to ground when the door is open. Note...there are three black with white wires in that connector - you want the one that is next to the gray with black wire.

thanks WhiteBird00. now, with that said, what would be the best way to install some sort of in-line switch to control them? also, if a switch is installed will the retained accessory power still continue to function only when the lights are manually on or all the time?

That depends on what you're trying to accomplish. If you want a switch that can just disable the factory configuration you would wire it differently than if you want a switch that will allow you to turn the lights on anytime.

I'll assume you want to disable the factory configuration with a switch because you can turn them on anytime by just turning the dimmer dial all the way up. Don't mess with the door signal wires because it can cause problems such as your radio continuing to play all night (because the BCM doesn't know the door opened). Put your switch in the courtesy light circuit near the BCM. You can just put an ordinary toggle switch in the ground line (white wire) to break the ground circuit and prevent the lights from working. Using the ground side is preferable over using the power side because your map lights will still work using the switches on the mirror. This will have no affect on the RAP system functions.
