1. If alarm is set and door is opened, horn beeps and lights flash
2. The VATS system will not let the car start unless the key w/the proper resistor in it is used
3. If improper key is used fuel pump is disabled for period of time
Not sure if setting off the alarm disables the car though...
If you're in a high crime area or park in public places often I would suggest upgrading...

Re: stock alarm I think the stock alarm is ok. I went into the spare tire jack space and raised the sensitivity of the system to the max. When cars go by the wind sets it off for 2 beeps. Doesn't annoy me, might annoy some people but they'll learn to stay away from my damn car. For extra protection I added a bat in the truck. It's cheap and it keeps people away when you swing at em... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[fight]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_punch.gif" />

Re: stock alarm I also found the sensor and adjusted it higher. The default setting seemed too low for me. It's actually pretty nice for a stock alarm. I also added a scanner LED that gets bad guys attention.
If they want something in your car they will get it if they are good enough no matter what alarm you have. IMHO it's not worth the extra money and wiring. Simply adjust the sensitivity and add LED's.

Re: stock alarm I have a '98 TA and i looked for the setting thing. Is it where the spare is? there is a box on the wheel well that says "shock sensor" or something on it but i don't see any *****, switches or anything to adjust it.
Re: stock alarm It is to the right of your spare tire jack. unless they changed it since 98. Mines an 02. Check your manual, look under alarm or something. There is a whole section on it. You can adjust it however you want. It should be easily visible in the spare tire space. Turn the little white **** to the right to adjust the sensitivity higher, down for lower.
