Default What is the little wire from the alternator for?

I'm trying to figure out what the thin red wire coming from the plastic connector on the top of the alternator is for? I accidently clipped it while putting in my motor mounts. I've crimped it back together and my alternator reads 14.3 volts with a digital multimeter, but sometime the gauge inside the dash reads weird. Any help would be appreciated.

p.s. I did not cut the thick wire that connects to the stud on the back of the alternator, just the small wire.

it tells the alternator when to charge and how much to charge... by changing the resistance you can change how much it charges.. apparently your connection added some resistance.

i got a wiring harness from the dealorship and there are 4 wires..one red the 3 others are brown with diff. color stripes, i took and guess and used the red wire which did not work so which wire out of the 3 brown wires is the right one?

Man I am in the same exact situation, but my connector has 4 white wires. I heard pt1235 has one wire, but the freaking dealers don't have it. I may have to look for an acdelco distributor. Let me know how it turned out. Do you think you connect all 4 wires to the red wire?

look at your old plug which positon was the old wire in? A quality solder/shrink wrap job will produce far less resistance then a butt connector btw.

Thanks. I just thought of that...luckily I didn't throw it away.

I heard painless wiring kits has the correct plug and autozone can order it. This for the others I've seen running into this problem and for those in the future. Another member posted that info up for me.
