Tach install - 3 wire Installation?

Tach install - 3 wire Installation? I keep reading that people are installing the Red, Black and green wires... But what about white (dash lighting to the dimmer switch or whatever). In my case, I wired the red to under the dash to a pink wire on the left hand side. The black went to under the dash, haven't tested the ground, but it's the bracket under the steering wheel. White went to the green line coming out of the dimmer switch, and green out of the tach went to the #10 (white line) out of the PCM. I turn the running lights on or lights on and the tach doesn't light up. Engine is out of the car so no way to test if the thing works without lighting. Not exactly sure if I have a bad ground of if I really don't need the white line. Any advice would be appreciated!
