got a new reciever
my question is. should i continue to use the monsoon amp in conunction with this. or do yall think this head unit would be strong enough to power the speakers without the monsoon amp hurting its performance? any setup suggestion would be fine. i do plan on buying a internally amped bazooka tube subwoofer also.
The Delco head unit is the weakest part of the Monsoon system (the speakers aren't far behind) but the amp is fairly decent. I think you'll be pleased with the sound if you keep the amp - it will also avoid rewiring everything. You can always upgrade speakers and amp later.
0. I used the stock Monsoon four about 2 months.
1. I swapped to a Sony Xplod head unit and changer from when the high end units were pretty good quality. I left the amp and speakers stock. Sound quality was much improved, bass was better but not great, high end was much better.
2. Swapped out front speakers for Polk DB650s, improved bass to a point. Overall sound much better.
3. Added trunk subwoofer (see sig), obviously a lot more bass.
4. Pulled Monsoon amp and added a medium size 2 channel to power front speakers, swapped fronts to MB Quarts. At the same time, moved Polks to rear positions. Rears now powered off head unit. Added much bigger amp to trunk sub (500 W rms). MB Quarts are teh best speakers I have ever owned, totally flat response, no peaks at all. Now I hardly adjust the equalizer away from flat. I mostly use the equalizer to bump the bass up and down when I drop the roof.
5. Recently I swapped the head unit to a Pioneer 7800. The Pioneer sounds much better than the old Sony.
All that to say, I couldn't stop changing things once I started.
