Default Anybody had the V1 and X50?

Right now I have the Escort Passport 8500 X50 but I'm starting to have some problems with it. It does have some nice features though like the highway/ city/ auto modes and it can detect up to 8 radar sources at a time. It doesn't look like the V1 has these. I like the idea of the arrows but usually I can tell where the radar source is at based on how the detector is alerting. If anybody has had both which one do you like more?

What problems are you having with your X50? I'm asking because that is the one I'm saving up for.

Thanks,
Nick

well i actually own 2, one for my truck and one for my camaro. i bought the one for the truck first because i didn't have the car. about 1 to 1.5 years after i bought both of them they started acting really funny. laser would alert when you did certain things in the vehicle like use the power locks or honk the horn. recently the one in my truck started to laser alert when you get on the gas hard (not fun to have it go off when you are flooring it to pass etc). it seems like there's a known problem with them reacting with the electronics in the vehicle and have read a couple theads on it. it also says "service required" on the display once in a while. i'm sick of the problems with both so i'm not going to service it.

in fairness i should add that despite these problems it is a very good detector and i wouldn't hesitate to buy another high end Escort. i am just looking into what else is out there.

Yea. I have read some reviews on that also. Seems like the preformance is about the same as the 8500 X50, just has the GPS feature. It is also an option but I figured there would be more responces about the 8500 vs the V1 than the 9500i. Not too many people have that yet.

if you have racing wires or whatnot, the radio interference can cause many devices to go haywire... not just your detector...

You don't run solid-cores, do you?

Eh, I think the arrows are kind of a waste... either way you are going to want to slow down... who cares if it's in front, or behind you?

I'd go more on actual detection performance... The bel STi and that new passport kick ***... they are about the same as the rx65 and the x50 though... not much better..

I'm glad they finally put in the GPS feature... there was this cheapass detector out there before that had that feature... you could mark where false alerts were, or common speedtraps... it would warn you like a mile in advance.

Are you talking about spark plug wires? Mine are all just stock and this is currently happening in my 2001 Silverado pick-up which I drive in the winter and it also happens in the Camaro and the 2003 Suburban. There are 2 different detectors that go between the 3 vehicles and it happens in all of them

I think i'm going to go with the new Escort. Preformance seems about equal between both but GPS> Arrows IMO.

i'm sure you can find a friend that has one or the other. take a ride with both and see which one you like better. i got teh passport cause i couldnt afford the V1. now that my passport is taking a crap, i might check out the V1 just for comparison sake.

I'd say go for V1, laser performance still owns with it. However, RadarBusters does have the 9500.

i'm not really concerned about laser. they way i've always understood it by the time any detecter goes off you already got busted because its such a narrow beam.

Laser detection is practically worthless...

but if you read the comparisons of the V1, the technology is so out-dated that it's not worth it... the new Bel/Escort stuff is pretty cool though...

Not to say the V1 is crap, but it's overpriced, and the technology is 15 years old...

http://www.radartest.com/article.asp?articleid=9090

"The V1 equaled the BEL in detecting Ka POP mode and slightly edged out the Escort. But it also generated the highest number of false alarms we’ve witnessed in years, so many that on a long highway trip we grew so weary of the constant warnings that we finally ripped it off the windshield and used another model instead. We’ve heard the same complaint from a number of Valentine customers.

The Valentine One is a highly sensitive radar detector--good enough that we declared it the winner of our 2000 Automobile Magazine shootout--but it's no longer top dog. The world has changed since it was designed in 1991. The Apple IIsi also was hot stuff that year but Apple knew better than to continue peddling the same box. They replaced it with smaller, faster, user-friendlier models packed with advanced features."

2005

-_-

Stop linking that f-ing review. V1 is updated constantly. It's improved considerably since then. It'd be like me linking an old 8500 review and saying it represents the X50.

I just didn't feel like finding the article with the Bel STi versus the V1... if I remember correctly, it curb-stomps the V1... so it would just further harmmer home my point...

I assume you meant "the x50 doesn't detect radars from behind you" and that's pure bunk. Any decent radar detector will detect radar from both front and rear. The only reason for the V1's rearward antenna is to make the arrows work. Once you get familiar with other radar detectors, you can tell if the signal is from behind you by the nature of the warning.
