Default alarm trouble

just bought a 98 t/a. for some reason the alarm goes off everytime you unlock the door. it appears to be a factory alarm. it quits as soon as you turn the igntion on. the factory radio is in the car now, but i beleive it was put back in before the car was sold. not sure if that matters. have been told to get a keyless entry fob and that will fix it. does this sound right? i should be able to unlock the door with the key. any suggestions?

How did you set the alarm without a fob?

If the alarm is set and you unlock the door with the door key, the alarm will sound until you start the engine with the ignition key. That is normal. The alarm can't tell the difference between you using the door key and someone else breaking in with a Slim Jim, but the ignition key has a resistor/chip in it which the car reads and allows the engine to start and turn off the alarm.

You can buy a new/used fob and program it and the car to work with each other.

The previous owner must have set it to passive arm or arm from the power lock switches. Passive arming makes the alarm automatically activate after the ignition is off and all the doors are closed. Power door lock arming means that the alarm will activate after the last door is closed if you lock the doors using the inside power lock switch. Both settings can be programmed on or off. The programming instructions are in your owner's manual and posted here: https://ls1tech.com/forums/showpost....49&postcount=4

Thanks for posting that! My current camaro doesn't have the keyfob and I guess the previous guy set it to arm from the power lock switches. Good to know thats something that can be programmed out...I thought it was just some weird fluke of this car

So I'm where the other guy is at, do you have to deal directly with the dealer for a new fob or will an aftermarket work (a generic from a stereo store) if it's programmed to work with the existing factory alarm?

It has to be a GM part (aftermarket won't work) but you can get it from several online sources including eBay.
