Default Stereo/amp setup questions

When I bought my car the previous owner was a tight *** and kept the rear
stealth sub box/amp/receiver. I reinstalled the head unit with my own which was no problem but I'm confused about the amp situation. I have the factory "monsoon" system if it makes any difference.

There were no wires spliced at the head unit, only a blue wire which my search revealed is for powering up the amp. I was listening to the radio and it appears the speakers which are next to the rear seats seem to play mostly, if not only, bass through them. Is this correct? The previous owner told me that he had blown those speakers once and had to replace them because the amp was too strong.

Ok, so this is what I'm left with in the trunk. Two component looking
connections for hooking up the sub. Where the amp was mounted I have
these wires:

2 Component wires (for the sub I assume)
1 small blue wire (for powering the amp up I assume)
1 red and 1 silver wire (12v power source)
1 blue wire and and 1 gray wire (not sure what these are for)

Does this setup sound like he had the amp just powering the sub or for all the speakers? If it's just for the sub, should I just buy a regular 2ch amp to get it back up and running?

I'm not copmletely clear on what you're trying to do (or ask) but I'll try to take a few stabs here...

First, if you're going through the stock amp (which it sounds like you are), the sail panel speakers use a low pass filter so they will only put out bass sounds. There are no high frequency signals sent to those speakers.

As for the other wires where the original aftermarket amp was intalled, I'd say it's a process of elimination on those two unidentified wires... they're the speaker wires. Try to see where they run and you should be able to see where the sub was installed. So what you're wired for is a single channel amp, not a 2 channel. Also, I'd be willing to be that those speaker wires don't go to anything right now. If he pulled out the amp and the rack, I'm sure he took the sub they were connected to as well. So what are you left with? A few spare wires that go to nothing. The component wires probably don't go to anything either if he originally had an aftermarket head unit.

First of all thanks for the help. Let me try and clarify things a little better.

There are no component connections in the dash area to connect to the head unit.

The component plugs I see are in two places.
1) where the sub was
2) where the amp was

I would assume this is how the amp connected to the sub.....correct me if I'm wrong.

Where the amp was located I have these wires.

2 Component wires (output to the sub)
1 small blue wire (for powering the amp up I assume)
1 red and 1 silver wire (12v power source)
1 blue wire and and 1 gray wire (not sure what these are for)

My assumption would be that the blue and gray wires are from tapping the sail panel speakers in order to provide the audio input to the amp. Does that sound right?

Does it sound like he had things wired right? and if so, would I just need a single channel amp to make it functional again?
