Default Weird gas gauge issue

I've noticed on a couple of occasions that my gas gauge will read lower than it should. Right now it's about 3/4 of a tank full and I noticed it was reading only 1/2 tank. I shifted into park and all of a sudden it moved back to 3/4 of a tank where it should be. What the hell could be causing that?

Well i had the same problem with one of my 99 t/a's. Ive read a lot of places that this is a common problem on the 99's but since yours is a 98, maybe it was built late in the production year and got a newer guage cluster. The problem is inside the cluster itself, not sure what, but when i swapped one out from one car to the next, the problem stayed with the cluster. Verifying that its the cluster and not the car wiring. I just bought a 2001 cluster with 35k for a good price off ebay motors from pick-a-part. It was the cheapest around, $35, but shipping was kinda high i thought, $20. If you buy one make sure to get one newer than 99!
Taking the cluster out is easy and only takes about 15 minutes total. If you need some help pm me.

My gas gauge does the same thing. Ill start it up sometimes and be like "damn where'd all my gas go?" Then as soon as I get down the road it will move back up.

Try tapping on the "glass" and see what happens. Mine would bounce all over the place. Be sure to zero your tripometer when you fill up. That was the only way i knew when i was getting low!

Thanks for the replies. It's weird that when I shifted into park all of a sudden it perked up to where it should be. It's not a big deal and I do exactly as you say in resetting the trip odometer when I fill up just to make sure I don't run out.

If it gets worse I'll try replacing the cluster like you suggest.
