Default No backlit buttons

I have a 99 Firebird and recently my steering wheel column radio buttons have gone out entirely. I don't have any backlight display behind the buttons. What should I look for or trace to fix this problem?

Thanks

First, check the two 1-amp fuses. They are both marked STG WHL CNTRL. Fuse #3 is for the illumination and fuse #13 is for the control functions.

Hmm, I checked both fuses and they are both good. I even switched them and still no backlight. Where do I go from here?

Time to get out the test light or multimeter. Check for power at the fuse. If you find power then the problem is in the wiring to the steering column or in the "clock spring" under the steering wheel. If there's no power at the fuse then the problem is between the headlight switch and the fuse. All the other lights are still working? The steering wheel control illumination is tied to the parking lights which run off the TAIL LPS fuse.

Yeah everything else works fine. But the car DID have a custom made stereo system in it when I bought it...however since then I pulled it all out. The only weird thing I notice other than the backlit buttons on the steering wheel is that when I apply the breaks the little light indicator that shows when the rear defogger is on turns on. So everytime I tap the breaks it goes on then when I let off the breaks it goes off. Weird huh?
