Interesting ideas. I doubt it will become a norm for manufactures. I think HID will stay on top. It would look cool as hell to see an entire headlight lit up with LED's coming at you though.
Cool article. Let's remember LEDs only are an econ advantage for vehicles or trailers you will be keeping for a long time!
For styling, sure go for it if you can fit it under a luxury car's MSRP.
I can't see LEDs being safer or more eco-friendly!

Cost remains an issue, but factors such as safety, environmental friendliness and styling flexibility weigh heavily in favor of LEDs.

Agreed, I think HIDs will stay for a good while. They're just now starting to get them to get the light output DOT legal, but I think they're far away from outdoing HIDs. For taillights, that's another story being directional and current friendly. 
The future will be interesting though, I've seen them go from nothing only an alarm light to a major thing in the past 6-8years!

LED lights seem to be hazy though, I have an LED flashlight and it is bright as heck but for some reason it seems to make what you illuminate hazy and hard to see the details of.
