car dies when blinker turned on

Default car dies when blinker turned on

Just as the title implies. My right turn indicator is lit solid, and when i turn on the right blinker the car dies dead. WTF

Damn, that sucks....

Good luck with THAT electrical problem.

Possible short to ground when the blinker is put UP?
The turnsignal thingy is FUBAR?

When did it start?

Maybe you're low on blinker fluid. You can get more here.

Your right indicator is on solid because you have a bulb burned out or a corroded socket on that side. Replace the bulb first and then move on to diagnosing the rest of the problem. BTW, does the car die when you use the hazard flashers?

i didn't try the hazards. I'm sure it is corrosion in a socket or something. I'll figure it out. It's just too damn cold to worry bout it right now.

Does it do it for left also?

I had a similar problem on my 94 GP. When I hit either blinker, voltage went berserk. Turns out my junction on the fenderwell where the battery and such connected (there's a jump post there) was dirty. Cleaned and all problems gone.

If it turns out to be a socket I was at the junk yard the other day and happen to have found 2 from another car in primo shape! Let me know if you need one. I had to replace mine before so I grab em when I see them.

Pigtails are available at Advance Auto for about $8 per side. Hit them with some dilectric grease and replace the bulbs. As fun as a trip to the bone yard can be, this time of year I, for that price, I'm buying new.

Have you tried changing the blinker fliud?




just put some in the gas tank, and some in the blinker fluid box beside the flux capacitor

LOL. This is probably the funniest electrical problem I've heard of.

Start with the bulb, and just check for corrosion and grounding issues all the way up to the wire source.

I had a similar problem once.

The guy who owned the car before me tried to make the lowbeams, highbeams and fogs come on at the same time. Unfortunately all the lights except the driver's side lowbeam were really dim. And whenever i hit the highs or turned on the fogs the engine would die. I took it to get fixed and the guy told me that there was a floating ground and the fog lights and highbeams were wired directly into the low beam wiring harness.

A little different kind of problem but I hope that helps

This seems to be a pretty common problem with Trans Ams especially when you get a few miles on em. Mine were burnt to a crisp and were all black. Swapped them for a nice junk yard set and treated with dielectric grease...no more issues.
