Default Looking for advice on incar pc setup

Building the computer I've got covered, installing it in the dash I've got covered. I just need advice on wiring it into my sound system, installing a switch to turn my power antenna on and off, and using my steering wheel controls to control it. Steering wheel controls I may be able to figure out myself. There's several guides on mp3car's forums I've taken a look at. Anyway, the audio system confounds me... would I brake something if I connected the left and right audio to rca jacks and plugged them into an adapter to 3.5mm phono jack of the audio in on the pc? Would it be loud enough? And is it possible to control the power antenna with a simple toggle switch?

get a soundblaster usb external sound card. your sound comes out via the usb port and it has outputs for the front, rear and a subwoofer, you can even run an input into it. I am running a compaq laptop that i am running the sound off one and it sounds great.

The stock head unit has four outputs but NO inputs (at least not without buying an adapter).

Also, I haven't seen the writeups on other forums but the steering wheel controls have only one input and one output wire. Each switch introduces a different amount of resistance in the circuit when pressed so you would need some kind of logic circuit to determine which switch if you want to use them for different things.

ah... believe it or not i have a friend that might be able to make a logic circuit for me if i knew the necessary resistance.

Okay, here you go. The resistance values for each switch are in the attached schematic.

Thanks guys, happy to help when I can.

Quik Z, if you are serious about the alarm, I'll be glad to help with where to make connections but I'm getting a little too old to crawl around under dashboards anymore.

The factory power antenna is controlled by the pink wire in the head unit harness. It provides power whenever the head unit is on (regardless of whether you're using radio or CD) to keep the antenna up. When the power is turned off the antenna retracts because it also has a battery (constant) power connection to run the motor.

You could easily install a simple toggle switch in the pink wire to manually control the antenna. Or you could just connect the wire to an ignition controlled source. That would make the antenna extend when you start the car and retract when you turn it off (basically the same thing it does from the factory).
