Default Sub Cutting In And Out

i have a jl 10w3 hooked up to an alpine 450 watt amp with an pioneer HU with jl components. the sub keeps cutting in and out and when i cuts out the rest of the speakers sound like ****. its fuzzy sounding. first i thought it was the eq of my ipod messing up the amps eq but its doing it with the radio also. they are all less then 6 months old.when the sub cuts off no sound at all comes out of it

I would say a separated voice coil, but if it's affecting the other speakers, too . . .

Does your amp turn off when the sub cuts out or is that still on?

what can cause a amp to shut off after like 15-20 minutes of playing?

could the thickness of the speaker wire be culprit? amp and speaker are both 2ohms

Thermal protection maybe . . . the amp could be overheating. I'm just guessing here.

No. I wouldn't run a cap. Get a good battery/alternator.

They just don't do much for helping things. Batteries and stuff are better choices. And beats me how to tell when they really go bad. I think they can actually impede power when they do though which may cause problems. Most audio boards are against caps totally.

I just ran into a problem like this in my car. My amp would cut out after demanding a lot of power out of it. I spent two days looking for answers and a audio shop said to replace the alt wire and the wire to the red distubution block under the hood. NOTHING. I over looked the the easy thing the Ground. I put mine it with a self tapping screw and over time it wiggled itself loose cauing the to loose a ground and the amp would go into protection mode. I have a Alpine Pdx1.1000 amp. 4 gauge wire to it plus have a fuse on the remote wire.

I always used a cap on higher power systems and it helped I thought. I didn't have an HO alternator, but had a good battery. Even with my MTX 800W rms mono amp my lights dimmed like crazy until I put the cap in. After the cap was in, no dimming whatsoever. My cap has a remote wire terminal, but only because it has a digital top with the voltage readout. I HAVE heard, though, that some of the cheapo caps suck. I like my Monster 1 farad cap.

If your amp goes off, you probably have the sub. wired to an impedance that the amp. isn't stable at. If it's a 2 channel amp (shame on you if it is) and it's bridged, it probably can't drive less than 4 ohms. Also, check for bad ground as mentioned.

Do not use a capacitor and do not replace your battery unless it's bad. You can add a battery if you need longer runtime with the car off, but otherwise, the only thing you should upgrade is your alternator and your wiring. You can't get more power out of the system than you put in. If your alternator can't do the job, then your battery will drain. Depending on how powerful the amp. is, it might not be a problem, but I wouldn't take the chance.

I'm sure it's been discussed before, but why not use a cap? As I said before, I noticed a big difference in keeping my lights from dimming, so it obviously helps somewhat. Maybe it doesn't make the subs any louder, but it's annoying to have the lights dim on me.

the amp i have is a american legacy LA690 1000watt amp i believe its 2ohm stereo stable.

I think my culprit is going to be my ground wire.
