steering wheel buttons??
I have the same darn problem, I had to bring it into the mechanics for some other bs, and it threw an airbag code they have to do a trace and repair on it, So im betting it has something to do with that. I dont think this helps, it probably doesn't, but I thought I would express my problem too
hit it with a hammer!! Seriously though, did you check the harness going into the back of the radio itself? Is the steering wheel control wire even in there? If not, you've got your answer, but if it is...hopefully you've got a multi-meter handy cause I'd start doing a continuity check to see if the radio is receiving a signal from the steering wheel at all
so it is testing good for continuity from the steering wheel to the radio? Remember, just cause it's plugged in doesn't necessarily mean that the wire isn't broken inside the shielding.

As I recall, no, the 95+ style wheel will not interchange - but don't remember why..but wait for anoher answer on that to be sure.
I ended up getting the radio button control panel off ebay that was advertised as working. It did.
I'd try jumping a couple of wire ends that the buttons touch - see if making the jump causes anything to work, like the volume. then you'll know it's the buttons. Then maybe some cleaning, soldering to get good contact on the buttons may help...
The 95+ style seem to work a long time but all of my 94's had poor or no function radio controls.
