A Return to Roots

After retiring from NASCAR, many drivers venture into team management or broadcasting, but Jason Keller took a different route, returning to his roots in classic cars. Unlike typical post-racing career paths, Keller decided to invest his time and resources into creating the ultimate 1985 IROC-Z Camaro. This project, a collaboration with Hawks Motorsports in Easley, South Carolina, showcases Keller's passion for powerful, vintage American sports cars.

The Classic IROC-Z

The 1985 Camaro IROC-Z originally featured a 302-cubic-inch (5.0-L) Chevy V8 engine. Despite its appealing design, the engine's performance was hindered by the emission control technologies of the time. This iconic mid-80s sports car, however, has found new life thanks to Keller's vision and modern engineering advancements, particularly with the introduction of a more potent powertrain.

Upgrading to Modern Power

Transitioning from the 302 to a more robust engine involved extensive modifications. Keller and the Hawks Motorsports team chose the 6.2-liter supercharged LSA V8, a modern powerhouse from the Camaro ZL1 and Cadillac CTS V. Custom engine mounts were necessary to fit the larger engine, and a complete drivetrain overhaul included a Tremec Magnum six-speed manual gearbox and a twin-disk clutch, maintaining the car’s classic rear-wheel-drive setup.

Performance Enhancements

The upgraded LSA V8 engine, enhanced with a ported supercharger, now produces around 800 horsepower. This level of performance rivals that of the Hellcat Redeye, making the revamped IROC-Z a formidable contender on the drag strip. To handle the increased power, the car also features a custom 8.8-inch rear end designed by Hawks Motorsports, ensuring durability during intense launches.

Exhaust and Aesthetics

Accompanying the powertrain upgrades is a 3.5-inch stainless steel exhaust system, giving the Camaro a roar befitting its restomod status. These modifications not only boost the car’s performance but also enhance its aggressive auditory presence, cementing its place as a standout among modern restomods.

A Testament to Passion and Skill

Jason Keller’s reimagined IROC-Z Camaro stands as a tribute to his enduring love for classic cars and his dedication to performance excellence. By collaborating with Hawks Motorsports, he has created a car that honors its heritage while pushing the boundaries of what an '85 Camaro can achieve. This project reflects Keller’s unique journey from professional racing to mastering the art of restomodding.
