Local Motors LS Rally Fighter is Like a Corvette on Steroids
What has two thumbs, and a smile as wide as an aircraft carrier? This guy! Why, because I had the opportunity to spend some time with the Local Motors Rally Fighter this weekend.
For those uninitiated it’s the LS powered dune buggy for the street made by a small outfit in Arizona and is about as awesome as you can get for under a billion dollars.
The car was designed completely through crowd sourcing, everything from the design to what motor they would use. It just so happened that an LS powerplant met their needs perfectly.
The shop tuned the motor to around 450-500 hp, although you can get more if you ask real nicely, and gave it miles of suspension travel to conquer just about any surface you can throw at it.
I was in downtown Chicago this weekend covering a manufacturing expo the Local Motors crew was doing a demonstration at and asked real nice (pleaded and begged) if they would let me get a ride in their bonkers trophy truck for the street.
To my amazement, they said yes, and they even provided me with my own professional stunt driver! It was awesome. Take a quick glance at this video I shot.
While a bit jumpy, I’m still getting the hang of shooting while trying not to die, it shows what a LS engine can do no matter what application you plant one in.
That motor had crazy amounts of torque that took a fairly heavy car and propelled it like a scalded cat! In short, it was an epic day. One that I hope to repeat sometime soon.
