How do I convert a LT1 T56 to a LS1 type T56?
I have a T56 that I pulled from a 93 Z28 and I would like to convert this tranny to a LS1 type. I know I would have to change the bell housing and the output shaft but as far as the rest I am not sure. This T56 will be behind a 427 LS7 motor that should put out anywhere from 600hp -800hp depending on how much juice I use. What parts do you all recommend? Thanks.

I did this recently, i changed the bellhousing, front plate and the input shaft. The output shaft does not need to be changed.
If you are trying to make that kind of power, you may want to get inside it and upgrade some internals.
Good luck

Thanks for the info AnniversaryZ238. I was looking at D&D Performance website and gave them a call about some of the parts. They told me to get the
-Viper output shaft
- steel 3-4 shift fork
-Carbon Fiber Friction kit
-Carbon Fiber Synchro Rebuild kit
-bearing kit
-Bronze Fork Pads (Pair)
We didn't talk about bell housing but which bell housing do you all recommend?
I was thinking about a steel one.

Yes merv. The '93 2.97 first gear boxes were geared (1-4) like an MN12 box. I don't remember if the 3.3x first gear boxes had a different input shaft too.
OP: you could do an LS front plate and the aftermarket (LS length, 2.97 ratio) input shaft. That's your second simplest option. Your easiest would be to get an LS box.

There isn't a 2.97 input shaft in the LS lenght . You could use a Ford 10 spline input shaft from a 2.97 after market box but its got a different pilot bearing diameter . Also , the front plates on the 2.97 ratio units have a shallower cluster bearing race hole . You have to machine it .080 deeper for the 2.66 ratio cluster to fit . Been there and done it .....

Please let us know the difference in lengths between a production 98-02 F-body 2.66 input shaft and the input from the aftermarket 2.97 unit that Borg Warner produced in the late 90's thats intended to fit a T5 bellhousing. They're the same spline and pilot race sizes.
I never noticed that the '93 front adapter plate was a different part from the '94. Since we would be talking about an LS 2.66 front plate and an aftermarket 2.97 input, it would seem he would need to shim, not machine.

If that is what will be done, then yes, you'd have to shim the later model plate even more than normal, to use the 2.97 geared countershaft.
