Question 04 gto alternator wiring question

almost finished dropping gto motor in my 71 monte. the alt has a main power lead and a 2 wire plug which has a white and brown. the white lead runs back into battery + with the main red, but is the brown wire(which originally went into body harness) a dash volt lite for low voltage????????

there are only 2 wires on this plug. not 3 or 4 like the f-body style alt. I am using the factory GTO battery/starter/alternator body harness. pretty self contained. power jumps from batt+ to starter to alt lugnut.very simple. the 2 wire alt. plug has the white which ends back up to batt+, and the brown, which ends up to a plug that goes back into the original body harness along with the starter purple lead from starter.

You are correct...the brown wire goes to the IPC for the charge indicator.

The f-body alt only has 1 wire on it. some trucks and vettes have 2 wires. Sounds like your alt is the vette style. So yes the brown wire would go to a + source through a resistance load. You can either wire it to an IGN+ source through a 194 style light bulb if you want an idiot light, or wire it to an IGN+ source through a 470ohm 1/2 watt resistor.

bad news. the car FINALLY runs, but alternator isnt charging. could anybody out there confirm i did correct wiring? it has a two wire plug with a white and brown wire and a + battery lug. Straight from the donor car, the white jumped to the main power wire going to + lug. The brown went into the Body Harness. Right now it is not jumped to anything.Anybody have Alldata out there to send me a schematic on this?????????? ran perfect in donor car. thanx

If the brown wire is not connected to anything that is most likely the problem. It needs to be connected to a resistance source and then IGN + 12 V. Connect that wire to a 470 ohm 1/2 watt resistor and then connect the resistor to an IGN+ wire. You can also use a 194 style lightbulb if you want a charge indicator light.

Bumping this old thread up as I'm having a slightly different issue using the 470 ohm 1/2 watt resister to ING+.

Whenever I plug the alternator plug in, I' get a 4 amp draw with the car sitting and the key out of the ignition. So my battery ends up dying with the alternator connected.

Any suggestions.

Thanks,
Frank

The answer to this question might help me. Is the white wire in the top or bottom coming out of the plug when the alternator is mounted?

The plug I'm using was from my conversion car so the wires coming out were two totally different colors.

Thanks,
Frank

I have no idea what that picture is. Looks nothing like the connector on the alternator, and there are no labels for the numbers.

Choices are:
1) White wire on top, brown wire on the bottom
2) Brown wire on top, white wire on the bottom

when looking at the plug with the alternator installed in the car.

if you have the same 2-wire plug as me(from a GTO harness), the brown is closest to the main BAT+ lug. white is furthest from it.White is basically jumped to that main red BAT+, and my brown runs thru a marker light pigtail to IGN+ which only has power with key on/running....

We are having a similar issue with an 04 GTO alternator harness going into a swap car. We are going to try and use the 470 ohm resistor.

can we eliminate the body harness plug and put the resistor between the purple and brown wires? Is that what is suggested above, or do we need to keep the body harness plug in tact?

EDIT: put the resistor in line, eliminating the plug, and everything worked out gravy.
