Bang for the Buck
Car kinda new and looking to save up some during the winter for some fresh spring horses. I'm looking to get a pretty much stock(other then SLP dual exhaust and K&N ram air system, approx 340hp now) car to 12second stasis while still making it a very reliable daily driver for under $1500. Discuss.
Oh and the car is a '01 z28 Camaro.

the best bang for the buck you can get as far as ET in an auto would be a good torque arm(300-500), some 4.10 gears(3.73's will also help a bit, 300ish), and a good TC(3400stall will still drive pretty close to stock and knock off some serious ET, 700ish new but you can find them used)
if you go with a combo like this you can easily get into the 12's without any negative effects on drivability or mileage.
the biggest thing to make sure you don't overlook is tuning. you can get a program like HPTuners for about $500. you will have access to every control in the computer, making it easy to add both power and fuel economy to your car. tuning software really pays for itself in no time, so it almost turns into a free mod after a while.

he doesn't need suspension mods but he needs big tires?
slapping a set of big stickies onto stock suspension is a formula for broken parts and more money spent. limited budget means spending money where it will do the most good AND last. drag tires wear out too quick to be a worthy first mod unless you have money to replace them regularly.

Drag radials and nitrous. You can get damn near 11s with just those, with no effect on daily drivability. Except maybe for the slightly reduced power with the colder plugs that will then be mandatory. And they'll need to be changed frequently.
He probably won't break anything unless he goes with steep gears and a very loose torque converter. Sticky tires should be the first mod (I wish I had done that) as the ones from the factory don't hold enough traction for even a stock car. Adding power can make the spinning worse.
And yeah, if he just mounts them on a seperate pair of wheels (cheap) for swapping on track day then they can last quite a while.

I always thought putting big slicks onto the stock read end was never a good idea... I think thats what he meant there.
This is true.
Regular DRs, like street-spec Nittos are a different story.
