what do you have to change on an LS motor to run E85. Do you actually gain more HP when running E85 over 92 octane is it worth doing? I am going to have the motor in my car rebuilt this winter and would like to run E85 maybe.

the whole point of running e85 is because it has a higher octane rating then the gasoline you get at the pump. the higher the octane rating is the more compression you can run on the motor. and compression=power but if you convert you car to run on e85 with the stock motor you will not see big gains. not to mention that it will eat allot more of e85 the regular gasoline.

E85 is perfect for FI cars, since it greatly helps with knock but the afr for it is completely different then normal gasoline.
Gasoline has no O2 molecules in its chemistry but Ethanol does. so when its being tuned they have to account for it. For gasoline fuel, the stoichiometric air fuel mixture is approximately 14.64 times the mass of air to fuel. Since Ethanol carries oxygen in its chemistry bonds you have to account for it but I will just break it down into what you need to know.
1.has oxygen in its chemical bonds C2H6"O"
2. has 30% less energy then Gasoline
3. you need bigger injectors since you would need to spray 30% more ethanol compared to gasoline so if you use 1200cc injectors they would flow like 840cc ( I know I know American cars use LB for injectors but I never learned the formula for LB injectors, but also ethanol is cheap, around me it goes for 2 dollars a gallon so it makes up in using more fuel and having more pit stops at gas station but in the long run it will be cheaper then Premium).
4. its stoichiometric is 9.765:1 compared to gasoline which is 14.64:1
5. get anodized lines for fuel since ethanol is a very weak acid
I can be wrong with some of the info as I have not research E85 in quite some time but I do love to converse about this corn fuel

The motor will not be stock, it currently has a 408 in it with 10.5:1 comp. But needs to be freshened up burns oil like hell. Just wanted some ideas on it E85 would be a better way to go.

I remember seeing a horsepower tv episode where they switched to E85 and did no other modification and saw a 20 hp gain and about the same amount of torque... the only problem is the fuel consumption went up too. They didn't really have to worry about injector size because they had a carb setup but did have to change out some components of the carb to make it work without the E85 eating through the gaskets and to allow proper flow
Given the cheaper cost of E85 plus the extra fuel required, I believe it will about even out at the pump. You won't be saving any money, but according to some you will see a gain

I wonder what they had to change exactly for it to work with the carb, I'm a noob when it comes to carburetors.

or it could be that they were comparing a stock tune, to a e85 tune where there was more timing for the e85 tune. simply switching fuels won't gain power, but if you tune for it, the potential to gain a few is there.

The car is just a weekend toy so I am not really concerned about how much gas it uses.
If I change the comp. to 11;5 OR 12:1 would I be able to run the car on regular gas if e85 was not avalable (not to race but just to drive).

This will be the best place for info.

You can run 11.5:1 on pump gas very easily.

OK, I just looked it up on my DVR.
On Horesepower they were using a sbc 383 with a edelbrock single plane intake and a Holley 750 carb.
93 octane - 459 hp
E85 +5deg timing - 477 hp
For the E85 run they had to retrofit the carb using a setup they bought on e85carbs.com for around $295
