Do transmission jack adaptors for floor jacks work well or not?
Not really wanting to shell out the 200 bucks for a tranny jack, but I found a guy on craigslist who's selling an adaptor plate for a floor jack for 25 bucks. Do these work pretty well, and has anybody had any experience with adaptor plates for a floor jack?

They work ok but tend to be a bit tippy. On a t56 or a 4l60e for me its easier to get under the car then get the trans on top of me then use my knees and hands to get it up there. But for $25 you cant hardly go wrong

Harbor Freight
Harbor Freight sells a scissor type transmission juck that has a strap to hold the transmission in place and it works pretty well especially for something you will probably use once or twuce it is like $80.00 but look in any car magazine and they have coupons for 20% off. Check their website and type in transmission jack for a picture

If you're doing it on the ground by yourself, I found the easiest for me is to put the front of the trans on a floor jack and the tailshaft on a jack stand. As you raise the front of the trans with the jack, you rachet the jack stand up also - notch by notch. I did this the last time I had the trans out. It took no time at all and I didn't have to hold it. With the jack stand under the tailshaft, you can slide the jack stand as needed.

This is the best option, I have one of these and they work great!
The adapter for your floor just plain sucks. I have it as well.
A few huge problems with it... unstable, not a real good way to tie down the trans and the adapter adds to much height with the floor jack, you really need to get car into the air big time to get the trans under the car.
The above scissor jack is low profile works awesome has tilting table and ratcheting tie down strap and can be use for other things. For the money its hard to beat it.

LOL, I bet. Okay, thanks guys. I think I'll just go ahead and buy it since then this probably wont be the first time I'll be seeing a tranny out of the car.

I have removed the trans on a lift and on the ground. Doing it on the ground, hands down Harbor Freight scissor jack!!!!!! I had one out using hand tools in 1.5 hours. Get one, you won't regret it.

I work at harbor freight and have personally used the 2.5ton floor jack/trans adapter. I found that it was REALLY tall and wouldn't slide under the car because I didn't get it high enough. I think 25" would still be too low, lol. I ended up getting it up in the tunnel just on the floor jack, then held it up there while my father-in-law fitted the adapter to the jack so we could then rest the tranny on the jack adapter. It was really handy, especially with the pitch adjustments. It made it a hell of a lot easier to get the tranny angled correctly so it would slide onto the bell housing.
The low-profile tranny jack has done real well for people, and I don't think I've seen any come back. If you have to own one, that's the one to get.
BTW, there are two tranny adapters, one for the black/yellow 3 ton floorjack, and one for the 2.5ton floorjack. Not sure how easy it would be to adapt them to jacks that aren't made for them.
