Ran out of gas- now wont start
Like the title says- i was on the way home and was gonna get gas- but my wife called me and i just forgot. The car started to feel like it was about to run out of gas so i let off the gas and rolled down hill into a gas station. Just before i pulled in it ran out and died as i coasted up to the pump. I put 30 bucks of gas in but it did nothing. It just turns over like its getting no fuel at all. Nothing looks out of place and i checked the fuel pump fuse and its good. Any ideas of what it could be?? Any help is much appreciated.

yeah i tried that a bunch of times before i had it towed home- didnt help. The gas station had stupid music playin so loud i couldnt listen for the fuel pump- and now the batts dead from trying to crank it so much. Guess the next step is to charge it and see if i can hear the fuel pump when i turn the key.

how many miles on the car and what year is it? I'm pretty sure your pump is dead. This happened to me in my old 98 Trans ams with 135k. Ran out of gas and that was the end of the pump. If you do a fuel pump cutting a access hole is the easiest and fastest way. It will take you less than a hour

Yep i guess i burned it up- I dont hear it prime at all when i turn the key now. im gonna blame my wife for calling me and making me forget to get gas... This pump looks like a good price at the ws6store http://www.ws6project.com/user_stor/...oducts_id=2923 Is that a good pump. How hard is it to replace? Anyone know of a link on here of a step by step?

easiest way is to cut a trap door above the tank, but dropping the tank completely is the correct (and harder) way to do it. Search in the fueling section and there are write ups.

I recommend installing a fuel pump door if you're gonna cut an access hole. if you try to reseal it with tape or glue of some kind, you will have fumes enter your interior from both the fuel tank and the exhaust.
Another useful trick in the future to see if your pump is fried if you can't hear it is to check the Schroeder valve. There is one on the driver side of the fuel rail. If you push it in and no fuel comes out or it just dabbles out, your pump is bad OR your fuel filter could be clogged. I recommend replacing them both at the same time.

Not saying the fuel pump didn't fail...just check the fuse first.

How long did it run while out of gas? It can run for awhile.
If the fuses are good, maybe disconnect the battery and reconnect it. Don't know what that'll do, but try everything before cutting that flap door to replace it. Its not a fun job from what I've been told.

yea josh crap didnt you know that fuel pumps last forever? Gezzzz also you might check the coolant that goes to the fuel pump it might be out...
Fuel pump going out........lol that never happens.... lol
Hey ls6 he prob. has the silent FP mod lol lol
Aron i would check the relay and if its good slap a fuel pump in it. Do the trap door. Aftermarket pumps dont last long. Also dont let your car get below 1/4 of a tank. The pump uses the fuel as a coolant. On high milage cars this is a killer to run it out of gas.
