oil cooler
Anyone install an oil cooler on their LS1? I did a search, but nothing came up. I've been doing some research, but am interested to find out what others have done.

I've got one and it keeps the oil too cool if just driving on the street. I custom made it with my buddy for roadracing at the track. Let me know if you need to know more? My setup ran about $500-$600 in parts.

There were some trucks that had factory oil
coolers. They used a special ($) plumbing
piece that bolts up where our cars have a
blockoff plate. Steel lines that slide on under
the exhaust on up to the radiator area. I think
this, with a thermostatic type trans cooler,
would be spiffy. But since I do not road race,
and am somewhat not in favor of adding a
new failure mode to the oiling system, I did
not go this way. A year or two back I posted
the part numbers, I don't have them on this
particular computer. The other option is one
of various remote oil filter kits, and put the
hoses to a cooler while you're at it.
I'd look at the Road Racing section for some
other perspectives on this.

pics of my oil cooler install:
http://207.127.219.37/rx7mods.htm#oil
not needed for street. like tommy said, a must for open tracking. my oil pressure would get so low after 15 minutes of hard driving on the track in summer...oil got too hot - installed cooler and no more issues.
on street, in current setup, it is too cool - barely 160 degrees.
i have to update the parts i listed on that page because i didn't use a few of the parts (#6, #7 and #8 from HRP).
Here are pics i took when i first got the parts ( i did not use the T configuration). the LG billet adapter is sweet. the blue fittings in the pics weren't used because i put the big oil pressure sending unit in the stock location behind the intake manifold, and i just put the smaller oil temp sending unit directly in the LG adapter.

so here is the real parts listing:
from LG motorsports:
oil cooler adapter $99
HRP World: 1-866-851-RACE hrpworld.com:
Description P/N Cost Qty Total
1) -10 120º Reusable Hose Fitting FCM4044 $27.25 1 $27.25
2) -10 90º Reusable Hose Fitting FCM4034 $22.45 3 $67.35
3) -10 AQP Hose - .56 ID; .80 OD - per ft. FBA1000 $6.75 7 $47.25
4) AN-10 Adapter - Straight SETM22-AN10 $8.00 2 $16.00
5) 600 Series STD 19 Row Oil Cooler - 5 3/4" Tall SET619M22I $198.00 1 $198.00
from jegs:
1) 1/8'' NPT to M12 x 1.5 105-2277 $11.99 1 $11.99 - this is what the autometer oil temp sending unit goes into, which in turn goes into the LG adapter (but this had to be drilled out slightly so the sending unit would fit).
2) Radiused Pump Fitting. -8AN Port to -10AN Hose 555-100164 $12.99 2 $25.98 --this is what goes into the LG adapter
so that is about $500 plus shipping. not including gauges/sending units.

The bracket I made to hold the Thermostat was really easy to make and worked out really well. Had it powdercoated after fabrication and it made for a really clean install. Everything tucks in neatly right alongside/behind the fans.

Mine was modeled off of SS#670:

I made a few changes. Link to some pictures of my setup....scroll down to the oil cooler:

Good luck!

I got my files off the old laptop and these are the
truck oil cooler part numbers I have. There may be
a new non-obsolete replacement for the adaptor.
But if you can get something from LG then I bet
GM pricing would be no better.
Part # 15725587 Truck oil cooler adaptor - obsolete
Part # 15203890 Truck oil cooler adaptor hoses
Part # 15203889 Truck oil cooler adaptor gasket
Is anyone using the sort of thermostatic-byppass
trans coolers that an A4 would, but for engine oil?

That's where I think the truck setup would be quite
handy, it runs along the block behind the stock
manifolds (so should clear headers easily) forward.
Bet you could pick off a junkyard HD model for next
to dirt cheap, if you can find one with the tow pkg
wrecked.

Has anyone taken a look at the Thunder Racing oil cooler kit? Its prety simple in design, they just supply you with all the parts that are needed. I am wondering if I need one. I dont do any road racing, but with only 3 gears, a 3.73 rear end, and a soon to be a 4400 stall, the rpm's stay prety high when im on the highway.

Side note, I did get my canton adapter to work with the QTP headers by having my buddy weld the one fitting on the side on about a 45 degree angle then pointing 90 degrees down.
