88-98 fullsize chevy truck LS1swappers....please step inside
I'm new to this board. I have a '93 fullsize Chevy truck that I'm thinking of swapping in an LS1. For those of you who have done this conversion or are in the process of doing it, could you point me in the right direction regarding this swap.
You guys are the experts and I'm here to learn what I need to do to accomplish this conversion.
Thanks for the help, SC.

Hi, Ed, thanks for the response.
I've built a number of cars/trucks over the years, but I'm new to LS1's, so I'm in the learning stage right now about the swap. I've been reading everything I can about LS1's.
I'd like to go ahead and get my LS1/4L60E combo. Will the f-body oilpans clear the crossmember in our trucks, or do I need to go with the truck pan. What about a/c compressor or alternator clearance on the frame rails - I looked at a 2002 LS1 truck engine yesterday, and the a/c compressor was mounted very low on the passenger's side.
What are you doing for harness mods?
I contacted Street & Performance (I've dealt with them in the past) about a stand alone LS1 harness and they want $900 (ouch) for the harness and another $250 to reprogram the PCM. Think I'll be modifying the factory harness.
If you'd like, you can email me directly at carpediem_00@yahoo.com
Thanks, Casey

Hey Casey...Yes, the Camaro(F-Body) oil pan does fit. The stock Camaro exhaust maifolds also will fit. The drivers side has lots of clearance and exits in a good location. The passenger side manifold is very close to the top of the upper control arm hinge point at the rear of the manifold, but with very minor trimming, it will also work & exits o.k. At this installed height, it looks and fits simular to the engine height that was removed. I just ordered from Street & Performance, a set of their LS1 "G-Body" thermocoated headers($495.00) that I hope will allow me to lower the engine another inch, but will see. I also ordered their "passenger side high" A/C compressor bracketry/pulley arrangement($350.00) and their "Sanden 508" compressor($209.00). I did not have this stuff in my budget to buy...But I talked myself into it, in the name of saving time. I swapped all the Camaro accessories(including the dampner/pulley) on the drivers side, over to the Corvette accessories, which brought everything up higher for clearance. I hope to send out my harness for modification to save $$, or I might use it "as-is" and add a simple VATS by-pass module. The computer has to be re-programmed. I narrowed that down to about 10 different places that can do it(???).Most seem to be in the $250.00-$350.00 range. The cross-members on the 99 and newer trucks provide clearance for any of the newer Vortec/LS1 air compressors in the factory location on the motors. Hope that is enough to get you thinking! Thanks, Ed

just to let you know most Gm shops will flash the PCM for about $100 and then you could get LS1 edit to delete whatever you don't want like vats or what not. And if you guys come across any ifo about putting an engine and trans into a 4X4 send me the info

For headers you can do the Schoenfeld long tubes that are designed for this swap.
The harness you could get from Speartech, PCM for less, nelson performance.
I used transdapt adapter plates on mine but you could use dirty dingo or any number of mounts
For the A/C you can either notch the frame for the LS ac compressor or get a high mount A/C mount for your factory compressor from dirty dingo or lsbrackets.com

The dirty dingo mounts work with your stock frame mounts if you already have a V8. They are adjustable so you can put the motor where the old one was. I measured where the brackets were on my 383 and put them in that location on the ls motor. I measured from the back of each motor. You can get your stock gauges to work. I used a 1998 Camaro temp sensor which is a 3 wire sensor. 2 wires go to the pcm and one to your temp gauge. Some say it reads a little off but on my 1992 it reads perfect. White wire from distributor is your tach wire. You will need to tune pcm to get correct reading. Oil pressure gauge use the trucks oil pressure sender you will need an adapter to thread into ls block. As someone else said Ls1truck.com has a ton of info on this swap.
