Outdoor car cover, worth it?

Outdoor car cover, worth it?
After a little over 3 years of owning the Bird, Im losing my garage. A quick search showed me a ton of threads without a lot of good info from years ago. Is an outdoor car cover worth it (hassle, price, actually work)? If anyone has a good experience with one let me know. Thanks.

Well i was talking to GofastZ and pretty much heard it is not worth it. With all the dust and wind outside all it will do is mess up the finish on your car. It happened on my dads 2010 SS, we had a outdoor cover and not there is scratches all around the vehicle. I heard it is really only good if you put the cover on right after you wash it. But mine is a DD so almost impossible for me to keep a good cover on it.

I bought a brand name outdoor car cover and I had to stop using it. As mentioned, the wind would build up and flap the cover and it scratched my clear coat pretty bad. Not around the sides but mainly my rear spoiler. I ended up using rope in about four different sections of the car to try and hold the cover in place but it was just too much of a hassle. Car isn't my daily driver and no garage.

What if you saran wrap the car's vulnerable spots before putting the cover on? I tried a cover for a car we had a while ago. The new driveway was still dusting (new driveways shed a lot of sandy dust for the first few months) and the wind would kick it up under the cover. I think something like a plastic wrap would be a decent protector with the cover over it. Otherwise a well-fitted model-specific cover should do well.

I'm not overly concerned about the finish on my car (getting some new parts put on next year and thus will get a repaint anyway) but even if I was I'd probably still not use a cover as I've seen some of the damage it can do. Snow falling on the car and just sitting isn't that likely to damage much, or even if wind-driven snow caused some scratches it would be a lot less than the wind beating the cover against the body panel. However, if I did have a finish I was trying to protect I'd cough up the money for a storage unit until I have my own garage.

Have you checked out renting a garage at a storage place for the winter? The last time I checked they were about $85 a month in my area for a 10 x 20 foot garage. If the car is garaged for the winter you can take the full coverage insurance off it and help balance off the cost of the garage.
