Whats wrong with my paint?
I have little spots on my car, mostly on the horizontal surfaces including hood, spoiler, roof behind t-tops, and below windows. The spots have a texture to them but they arent big bumps or anything.
These pics are from below the driver window. I tried using distilled white vinegar but it had no effect.
Could these be water spots that 'etched in'? Could it be the bubbling paint that some GM cars have?
The pics make them look worse then they really are but its still pretty bad.

Have you tried polishing compound?
From the pictures it looks like you got some airborn metal/steel particles that settled on the car and started rustingfrom the moister in the air. I have had this happen on my car several times from driving my car to work, I do body work/ paint for a living. If thats what it is it will rub off with some light duty compound. If it has been on there for a while it might have some spots where it has started to corrode or stain into the clear coat but most of it should rub off.
Good luck!

Yeah, it looks like metal dust or some nasty acid rain got on it. Try a clay bar if it's metal dust, but I don't think it will work if that is acid rain damage.

If you have no experience with a buffer then find someone who does. It is easy to get carried away or catch an edge and burn through the paint if you dont know what your doing. but as a test you can use any fine compound by hand and see if it removes the spots before paying someone to polish the car.
guess ill hold off on the claybar. ill just stop at every paint and detail shop i drive by and get a better idea of what to do.
i have 3m rubbing compound professional formula, would that be safe to try?

Dont hold off on the clay bar, it will remove the contaminants and if properly used (lots of lube and frequently folding of clay to expose a clean surface) wont ruin the surface. Buffing wont remove as much of it (and most likely not all) and it will take much longer and also take down the paint (making your clear coat thinner) as well as you would have to buff the whole car or it will look uneven. Go buy a clay bar and lube, ask any detailer and they will tell you the same. Go check out autopia.org and post this same thing on there and they will tell you the same, hell go to any detail site and they will tell you the same.
