Well if the car is a 98 then i think it is stored in the cluster itself so you would need to get it reprogramed.

What is wrong with the odometer? did the display go out or did it stop counting or something like that?

Your cluster is junk, You can get either a new one or a used one. But either of them would be re programmed to the current mileage of your car.

my understanding is that no it wouldn't, it would show what came out of the old car but I think it will throw a code, but I know it is detected at the dealershit

Are you saying they would need to be, or they will automatically? If the latter, then no, mileage is stored in the cluster.

The mileage of a used cluster would show, say the cluster has 3,000 miles on it, the cluster will show 3,000 miles. The cluster would have to be re programmed to show the actual mileage of the car.

I dont believe there is a bulb you can replace for the odometer. It is built into the cluster.

Others have changed its color. It may not be easy to replace, but its replaceable,

You need a new instrament cluster. It's one unit and when one thing goes out the only way to fix it is to replace the entire cluster. It's the new 'plug and play' type of auto repair. 2 out of my 4 Pontiacs have needed it done. There are no user accessable bulbs to replace.

it's not 1 bulb, it's 3 LEDs. All 3 LEDs going out at once is like 1 in a quad-megazointillion. Chances are its simply the cluster as most the discussion is going.
