th400 builder's opinions needed---rebuild kit questions..
Hi. I have used the search and came up with nothing. For a winter project I am adding a moser 9" and th400 to my mainly stock LS1, and I need opinions on rebuild kits. I already have a few th400's at home to choose from so no prob there. I will be rebuilding the tranny myself because I don't pay anyone to work on my car. I have done a few, and it's not hard to do as long as you pay attention and take your time. I was wondering what everyones opinion is on the best th400 rebuild kit to buy. I am leaning towards the Hughes one w/ Red Alto clutches. But there is also B&M and TCI. opinions?

You don't need the red clutches, save your cash.
Stock Borg Warner tan clutches are good to the point of needing aftemarket shafts in the trans IME.
I usually use stock tans up to 500 HP and then upgrade to Hi-Energy frictions at that level.
I've used stock steels at over 1000 HP (1400 or so approximately in 10,500 lb monster trucks).
The TH400 doesn't need fancy clutches to survive, just good build technique and proper hydraulics.

From what I've seen the B&M clutches look like Alto reds with b&m printed on them, same with TCI, and they both use the same brand paper, rubber and sealing ring kits.
In other works, they all look like the same kits with different names.

I have seen many stock th400's used for 400-600hp ranges. I was figuring that it wouldn't hurt to put some good stuff in there since I would be rebuilding it anyways. I plan on building a 408 stroker in the future though. It would just take me a few years since I am saving for a house and trying to find a better job. I just rather have it done the first time instead of having to upgrade again later. And I agree, They appear to be all the same except each company puts their logo on them. Seen that many many times. But, I don't see my car ever getting past 800hp, so I think I will take your advise and save some $$.

I overhauled my TH400 (truck in sig) with a stock GM overhaul kit. Also used a Ebay manual valve body with t/brake and 3500 stall converter. Lasted about 3k miles until I blew the lugs off the case (that retain the intermediate clutches) come to find out when i replaced the pressure regulator spring i put the reverse boost valve in backwards. Bought another used th400 off of craigslist for $75 and swapped all my parts over. Been great since! I have less than 1k into the whole job.
