Want to get 3600 stall do I need to ditch the 2.73's?
OK so I'm starting to plan my fall/winter mods that I will get to enjoy next spring. (Sad huh gotta start thinking about winter already) I plan on getting a 3600 stall and was going to get 3.73 gears but have been thinking lately that I might be better off with 3.42
Car is weekend driven and will see a little track time along with the occasional street race. But I aslo don't want to KILL the mpg, I usually get around 26mpg. So should I stick with 2.73's and get the stall, go with 3.42's, or all the way with 3.73's?
With these mods and the above options what would I probably run the 1/4th mile in on good tires?
Pacesetter LT's, Weiand Intake, smooth air bellow, custom y pipe, magnaflow exhaust, SLP lid

The bigger gears (3.73) will make the car easier to drive. It will take less gas pedal to get the car moving. That converter and those gears where made for each other. You'll be use to it in one day and wonder why it wasn't a factory option.

Ok Sounds Good That makes sense I was doing some reading on here last night and read so many different opinions about stalls and gears and how loose they are with what gears that I decided to start my own thread to clarify stuff. Thanks for the response

Also read about guys having trouble after install and needing to get tuned to match with the new mods. There isn't really anyone around here that does tuning that I know of, and the closest place for a dyno tune is the twin cities. My uncle does do custom harley tuning, I wonder if his equipment for that would work to tune a car too.
If I do also add Nitrous I will more then likely budget to go get a dyno tune and they would take care of everything then I believe?

I went with the 3.42's over the 3.73's because of the rpm at crusing speed. I drive my car to work and back quite a bit during the summer and needed to retain some mileage.
Just got done with my string of upgrades.
First I put in a PBuilt Level 2 tranny and their 3200rpm 9.5 inch stall (1.69str) and ran it as is with the stock 2.73's.
The 2.73's made the converter feel extremely loose and it took a lot of gas to get it to move.
After the 3.42's were installed it feels damn near like stock except it hauls *** now.
That is with a 40/60 mix of city/highway.
1.Stock with 2.73's I got 25mph
2.Stall with 2.73's i got 23mph - took lots of gas to get it up to speed
3.Stall with 3.42's i got 25mph - effortlessly gets up to speed. (based off of 2 tanks of gas so far.)
My car goes in next weekend to get a street tune done. Hopefully it doesn't change the economy much because i'm rather enjoying it.
Hope that helps your decision.

I have 3.42's and I really like them with that stall. You definitely need to ditch the 2.73's if you want crisp responsiveness in city driving.
The 3.73's will work great but you'll give up a little more mileage on the highway. I get 23-24mpg @70-80mph with the 3.42's. So you'll give up a little from the 3.42's. But there won't be a difference in town.

I have 2.73s in my car right now unfortunetly(lacking the $$$$) to change that but if you have the money i would say it is a no brainer to go with both the rear and the stall. I would also get the rear first. That way there you are set there for the long haul and can change the other cheaper things as you desire later on.
Also get the 3.73s you live in wisconsin, not california where the speed limit is 75, so dont worry about running out of gear.

I ran 12.60's with a lid, cat back, 3600 stall, 2.73s, tuning and sticky tires.. that was with 1.6-low 1.7 60' times in good air. after 3.73's I gained 2 mph but only .1 with low 1.6 60's again with good fall air. so actual track times I didn't gain a lot form 3.73's but the seat of the pants feel and daily driving is wicked with 3.73's. since then I installed Lt headers, Ported TB, and TD's. I've run 12.3's with crap high 1.7 60' times so its time for more suspension work.
Mileage wise I used to get close to 30 mpg all highway driving with 2.73's but since the 3.73's I get at best 25mpg all highway going 70-75 mph and average 16-17 mpg 50/50 city/highway driving.. and around 14-15 mpg with 80/20 city/highway mix..

I have a Vig 3200 with 2.73s and have ran it like that for the past 3-4 years. It drives just fine... maybe I've just gotten used to it. I planned on putting in 3.73s to get the 'kick' back, but figured I'd wait till I just put in a 12 bolt. With that said I've run a consistent 12.50 @ 108 with a drag radial and LT Headers on a 1.78 60ft.

My usual highway cruising speed is 60 so I think I should be ok with the 3.73's, speed limit is 55 here, and I've already gotten a warning for 5 over so yeah I only cruise at 70 on the interstate. I would love to put a rear end in right away but don't think I can afford to right now.
I'll take the 10 bolt until it can't take any more. Or when I grad in the spring some money I get from my party can go to upgrades

I have a Y3000 coupled with 3.73's, and the vehicle spools up quicker due to the rearend gears, my shift extension is higher due to them also.
I would ditch the 2.73's for the 3.73's, and remember you are going to a 3 series carrier.
Your gas milage will suffer however.

^^ or he could get " thick" gears and still use his 2 series carrier like I did.
