Default Should i Stall My Stock 4l60e Or Not????

im stuck on wheather or not to stall my stock 4l60e or not... im procharged makin 540rwhp 505rwtq, pst 3.5 inch driveshaft and a moser 9 inch with 3:50 gears. i definitly want to do a yank py3400 stall but cant decide if i should wait till i save up for a new FLT 4l60e or just buy the stall and cooler and put it in my stock unit.... it'll probably take me till next year to save up for a whole new trans but i can afford the stall and cooler this season. thanx for any help

At first I was going to say yes when I saw your title, but after seeing your power level I don't know man.

I mean it would be awesome if you did it, but even more strain on your stock transmission; and if the tranny goes out it can take your new expensive converter out too (they may be able to be rebuilt)...

Tough call.

All depends on driving style and get a LARGE cooler. Heat+tranny=boom....A stall would really wake the car up though (like a procharged car is not awake HA).

loll the car would definitly be a ton faster with it i think, i dont beat on it a lot at all, but i do GET on it more than once in a while, the car sees the track like 4 times a year but mostly i get on it from rolls if i do get on it on the highways...

It is a gamble, but if you don't go to a track often and dead hook that 540rwhp (+ torque increase from the stall). You've got a chance I would think...

I would probably take it easy at the track until you got a built tranny... although I know how tempting it is to head out and see what she can do!

Im surprised that your stock unit has made it this far. Even the factory 4L65E with the hardened shafts, 5 pinion planets, corvette servo...etc... is only rated for a mere 385 ft/lbs. Its amazing that your stocker has made it this far behind 540 RWHP! Even some of the built badass 4L6xs are only rated to 600~RWHP.

If I was you I would save the hassle of having to tear the thing out twice. Not only that, but if you buy a $700 race converter and smoke a trans, then your converter will be crap too until it is cut and cleaned so it doesn't damage your new tranny.

You gotta figure that your launching at around 1,500RPM on the stocker. Now look at your dyno sheet and compare the numbers once you start launching at 3,000+. As for your 10 month question, IMO no way. Better to set the car up right the first time like you already have with the reliable ProCharger (compared to other F/I choices that usually have more problems) and Moser mods.

I can tell you what we did to my truck... bought a built 4L60E Street & Strip Stage 4 from FLT, called over to Texas Speed and ordered a Vig 3400. TS shipped the Vig to FLT where the two met, installed and dynoed together. It was a match made in heaven.

My FLT 4L60E has the Sonnax servos on the 1-2 and 3-4.

Now you have more than 500rwhp, I'd def give Vince a call and look at all your options.

yeah my stock trans is a trooper! LOL all its got is a transgo shift kit and it shows no sign of slippage or failure but although i think the stock stall might have a shudder to it cause when the car shifts into 4'th under 40 mph it gets a really bad vibration and it wont go away unless i put load on it or shift it into 3'rd........

From Performabuilts web site:
We also eliminate the partial lockup function GM mistakenly engineered into the transmission, thus eliminating converter shudder, premature converter clutch failure, and the well known code 1870, which causes high "line pressure", no fourth gear, and teeth cracking shifts at low throttle. Lockup is either OFF or ON, not slipping off and on as it did with the factory PWM working. This does not affect performance, but it does have the added advantage of increasing low speed fuel efficiency, which at today's fuel prices is like getting a bonus.

I just bought a Level II from them w/billet stall

i thought u wanted to keep a low stall with boost? and if u mostly get on it from rolls and at highway speeds a stall isnt going to help u anyways. just wait till u get a built trans thats what i would do

Yeah, I am surprised your stock unit has survived this long behind a motor making that kind of power. I would wait on the stall till you can afford to upgrade that trans, its a ticking time bomb for sure.

If you are planning on upgrading to a stronger trans within the next year, I would just wait and do both at once. That's just me though, I'd prefer to save the time/money for the beefed up unit if it were that close in the future

You dont remember racing with a stock stall and falling to 3k every shift? Shift extension helps a lot. Not too mention if you go big, like 4k+ and get a decent STR, you will still multiply at 40+MPH.

A stall will help from a roll. You want a converter that you're not going to blow through, not necessarily a low stall.

I would just wait, your stock trans isn't going to make it a year unless you drive it like a grandmother. You'll be buying a trans in a few weeks most likely. I'd talk to FLT, they build a great trans.
