what does everyone think of 4.10 gears and stall converter
I am switching to a built auto from FLT or Performabuilt. I currently have a T-56 my rear gear is 4.10, This will be a daily driver with the goal of a fast street car. My setup up is heads, cam, exhaust, other boltons, using drag radials. Should i switch gears?

Another questions is if i stay with the 4.10 versus 3.73 what will my rpm and driveability be like? And How much will this affect my top end beyond the quarter mile? Every once in a while i get those guys that wont give up and it takes a good mile to prove it. I know the 3.73 will be better for top end speed but by how much?

I have 4.10s and a 3200 Circle D stall and on the highway at 80 im at like 3000 rpms or so. I bought the car with them in it, but I plan on swapping them out in the future.
However, I still managed to get 17-18 mpg on the highway with those gears and im cam/stall/bolt ons

I LOVE my 4.10's! I shift at 7000RPM. I get 25MPG and have had the car well in excess of 150MPH with more to go. I drive from Traverse City to Detroit and back for the Woodward and Telegragh Cruises-270 miles one way. Also, the Grand Rapids Cruise, about 120 miles one way. My motor is built for higher rpm's. The diff ratio is part of the "Total Package", so to speak. Your diff ratio should be chosen based on lots of criteria: Heads, cam, intake, hedders, compression, trans and converter, etc. If your car is mostly stock with minor bolt-ons, 3.42-3.73's are great. If you are going to play, the 4.10's are awesome. With the car and trans properly tuned, it will feel like it came from the factory. Since you already have the gears, try them out for a while. If you don't like them, go to the 3.73's.
PS,
I should add I run 28" tires. That will have to be taken into consideration.
Good Luck!

4.10 @ 60 w/ 27" tire = 2143 RPM
4.10 @ 70 w/ 27" tire = 2500 RPM
3.73 @ 60 w/ 27" tire = 1950 RPM

Yes DannoWs6 is correct. This is 90% street car with a current nitto drag
17/40/275 tire if i remember it is a 26" tire. If i take it to the track it will be just for fun to see what i can do.

I daily drove 4.10s and 4200 stall. It's not bad unless you want to go 80 on the highway for a long time. That equaled 3000 RPM and I didn't like it.
With 4.10s and stock tires you'll be at 2448 RPM @ 65mph. That's not too bad. Right now my 3.23s do 1929 RPM @ 65mph. That's good for long highway drives. I have 4 miles to work and I use the highway for an hour on the weekend so I could get 4.10s again and it wouldn't be a big deal. If I had an hour commute to work on the highway then 4.10s would be too much. It also depends on tire height. If at some point you'll get 28" tires then you might want to step it up with gears. Are you still on the 10 bolt? If you have a manual, forget 4.10s and drag radials. You will strip the pinion teeth first time at the track.

I have 373's and a stock stall on 245 50 16 's .My car runs @ 2400 rpm at 65 mph . 410's are ok if your at the track all the time .On street mostly ?? Nahh ,stick with 342's or 373's and a nice converter (3600- 4000). It will come out of the hole very nicely .

Thanks guys for the input. DannoWS6 my Z28 is currently an M6 and i still have the factory 3.42 gears in the garage. I think i will play with the 4.10 that are currently in the rear and if i dont like it i will throw the 3.42 back in. Unless any one thinks this will have an impact on the stall converter stall and str ratio.
