Full manual 4L80E

Although if it's running the stock PCM, I would always keep auto function.

I had a TH400 and GV in my personal car, I pulled it out and sold it to install a 4L80E.

I thought the GV was a POS that shifted rough, caused clearance issues, and driveline angle problems.

However if advice based on actual first hand experience isn't what you want to hear I'm sure there are lots of internet experts who have never had either who can help you out.

First time I have heard of problems so far. I was asking for pics, not internet experts or instances where driveline angles could'nt be dial'd in. Got what I needed on YB so thanks anyway.

The GV's are tough as nails. However there is no calibrating the shift quality.

I wasn't willing to totally destroy the tunnel on my '69 Chevelle to install it, despite GV saying it fits with minimal clearancing.

I doubt it will fit as well in a 4th Gen F-body without major mods, hence the 4L80 recommendation.

They are tough units but there are some drawbacks (no lockup converter). I used a variable pitch converter setup. Overall a neat setup but not as clean or driveable as a 4L80E IMO.

They were originally used in medium duty trucks in Europe and in Triumphs, etc.

i have added a 2.75 gearset in a 400, then dropped back the rear gears to get lower RPM's for cruising, but a lot depends on your converter stall-sometimes lowering the RPM's leads to less lockup and more RPM's, and heat
One concern i had when i checked out a Gear Vendors was the stall thing and less RPM's, how it would affect it
i have used a switch pitch 400, which helped on the converter side, would be neat with a gear vendors added
most guys go with the 4L80E because of the lockup feature, O/D (i did anyway)
thats my .02
